Exploring Career Decisions

Class Overview: This middle school course provides an orientation to the world of work. Emphasis is placed on self-awareness, understanding the world of work, and the career planning process. Based on the National Career Development Guidelines, skills learned in this course include, but are not limited to, communication, personal management, and teamwork. English language arts are reinforced. Work-based learning strategies appropriate for this course include business/industry field trips and job shadowing. 

Interest, Attitudes, Values, Personality, Learning Styles and Skills

Students will understand and be able to categorize interests, attitudes, values, personality, learning styles, and skills. Through categorization, examples, and listings students will identify and understand personal qualities that make them unique individuals.

How Interest, Values and Personality Influence Career Choice

Students will understand and make the connection between their interests, values, and personality and career choices.  Students will begin matching careers to who they are.  ​

World of Work and Skills Needed for Employment Success

Through categorization, examples, and listings students will understand the classifications of work, why people work, and what makes the world of work change.  Students will conduct career searches via the Internet to increase their understanding about the world of work and skills needed for employment success.

Understand job search techniques

​Students will understand resources to seek employment and how to apply and make a plan for employment.  At the completion of this competency students will have a preliminary career plan.
